Tsunami warning issued after strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near Tonga

Tokyo: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Tonga on Monday morning, prompting the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre to issue a tsunami alert for the region.

The earthquake, which hit approximately 100 kilometres (62 miles) northeast of Tonga's main island, raised concerns about potentially hazardous waves affecting coastal areas within 300 kilometres (185 miles) of the epicentre.

As of now, no reports of damage have been confirmed, but authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Tonga, a Polynesian archipelago of 171 islands with a population of just over 100,000, is located more than 3,500 kilometres (2,000 miles) from Australia’s east coast.

The island nation remains on alert as aftershocks continue to follow the initial tremor.
