A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand at midday on Friday causing widespread destruction. The earthquake, centered near Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, also triggered a 6.4-magnitude aftershock minutes later, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Strong tremors were felt as far as southwest China.
In Myanmar, the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Sagaing region, about 11 miles south of the city. The disaster prompted Myanmar authorities to declare a nationwide state of emergency.
In Thailand, a high-rise building under construction collapsed in Bangkok, burying dozens. A dramatic video on social media showed the structure near the Chatuchak market toppling into a cloud of dust as onlookers screamed and ran for cover. Local reports confirmed three fatalities in the Thai capital so far.
The British Foreign Office issued a travel advisory, warning that aftershocks are likely and advising travelers to follow local authorities’ guidance. The advisory stated: “There has been a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, with strong tremors reported across Thailand and some damage reported to buildings in Bangkok. There may be after-shocks. If you’re in the area or planning to travel there, follow the advice of the local authorities or your tour operator and monitor local media.”
In Aung Ban, Myanmar, a hotel collapse left at least two people dead and 20 others injured, Reuters reported.
The ceiling of Mandalay International Airport collapsed due to the tremors, leading to flight delays and cancellations. Myanmar Airways confirmed all flights were grounded.
In Bangkok, guests at Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Thailand’s tallest building, were evacuated as the quake struck. U.S. tourists staying in the high-rise described the terrifying experience as the building swayed violently.
Access to information in Myanmar remains restricted due to state-controlled media and internet limitations. The BBC noted that the country has been in turmoil since a military junta seized power in a 2021 coup, further complicating emergency response efforts.
The full extent of casualties and damage remains unclear as rescue efforts continue in both countries.
