A wanted Teesside man has been detained in Turkey after more than two years since a warrant was issued for his arrest, Teesside Live understands.

Ewan Aaron Corbett, whose name has previously been spelled publically as Euan, is said to have left the country before his court hearing in 2022 following a car crash in 2020 which killed 21-year-old Shane Finn, from Grangetown. Corbett had been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing death whilst uninsured and unlicensed.

Teesside Live now understands the 26-year-old has been detained near the Iranian border and is being held by authorities in a Turkish prison. An anonymous source told Teesside Live that Corbett had been detained around four weeks ago.

They said: "The British Embassy are aware of the situation. The conditions are absolutely appalling, there are 16 of them in a cell all sleeping on the floor."

It's said that Corbett was detained crossing into Iran. The Teessider is said to have lost weight during the weeks in detention and is living on a diet of bread and water but is said to be "on top of the world, as always".

Interpol previously issued a red notice for his arrest, with a spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development now telling Teeesside Live: “We are aware of a British man detained in Turkey and are in touch with the local authorities.”

In January 2024, North Yorkshire Police issued an appeal for Corbett stating that he “remains wanted” after reportedly leaving the country. The force confirmed that Corbett, believed to be from Thornaby, is wanted for “failing to appear at court in 2022 in connection with a fatal road traffic collision”.

Since then, it has been reported that Corbett was photographed in Switzerland, Thailand and Vietnam, The Mirror previously reported.

At York Crown Court in January, 2024, prosecutor Timothy Jones said: "[He] has been moving around south-east Asia. There is an Interpol red notice out on him and an EU arrest warrant.

A trial set to take place in September last year did not go ahead and a bench warrant was issued for Corbett's arrest.
