2 arrested for fatal shooting of Camay Mitchell De Silva at Delaware State University
DOVER, DE. (CBS) -- Police in Dover, Delaware, announced Monday that two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of an 18-year-old woman on Delaware State University's campus last month.
During a press conference Monday, police announced that 20-year-old Destry Jones and 18-year-old Damien Hinson, both from Dover, are being charged with the murder of Camay Mitchell De Silva. Police added the pair are also charged with the attempted murder of two other young men in connection with the April 21 shooting.
Police said U.S. Marshals and other law enforcement partners helped arrest Jones in Brooklyn, New York, last Thursday. Hinson was arrested later that day in Dover, police said.
According to Dover Police Chief Thomas Johnson, Jr., neither of the suspects in this case are enrolled at or affiliated with DSU.
Just before 2 a.m. on April 21, police said officers assigned to a team working Delaware State University campus heard what was believed to be gunshots near Gate 3 along College Road. Police said university police received a shots fired report on campus around the same time.
Police sid no crime scene was found when they arrived to the area of Tubman-Laws dormitory where a physical fight and shots fire was reported.
Another call, investigators said, reported an injured woman near Warren-Franklin dormitory. When officers arrived, they found De Silva suffering from a gunshot wound to her head.
De Silva was taken to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.
Police claimed Jones and Hinson were involved in a fight with two other men before shots were fired. Investigators do not believe De Silva was the intended target or involved in the altercation.
It's unclear how long the extradition process will take for Jones, who remains in New York. Hinson is being held in Sussex County on cash bail exceeding $3 million.
De Silva's family said she was at DSU visiting her best friend when the shooting happened. At the time she was a student at Morgan State University of Baltimore, but planned to enroll at the DSU this fall with dreams of one day working in the cybersecurity world.
"Camay never ceased to impress me," her mother Shanelle de Silva said. "Like my family said, reading young, walking, talking, just everything she did, she did it early and maybe that was just a way to know she wasn't going to be here as long as we wanted her to be here."
Delaware State University said it will honor De Silva at commencement later this week.
Following the shooting, National Nonprofit, which was formed following the mass school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information that led to an arrest.
