HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi proclaimed May 4 as Wildfire Community Preparedness Day in anticipation of a drier and hotter than normal summer.

City Fire Prevention Bureau Chief J.C Bisch is calling for everyone to take proactive measures to protect their homes and keep their families safe.

“Hawaii is not immune to wildfires and we all know the destruction they can cause, however through education and action we can create a safer community and a more resilient community,” Bisch said.

As part of that education, fire officials encourage residents to clear 30-feet of defensible space around homes, to remove debris from gutters, and to make sure fire lanes near dwellings and neighborhoods are clear of any obstructions.
