Bryan Oviedo scored an own goal as Costa Rica were beaten 3-0 by Japan on Tuesday.

Sunderland’s in-form left wing-back is returning to Wearside after two sobering defeats during the international break.

Oviedo missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town because he was in south Asia playing in Costa Rica’s first two games since the summer’s World Cup.

Beaten 2-0 in South Korea on Friday, they lost their second friendly 3-0 in Japan in the early hours of Tuesday British time.

Oviedo played the whole game against the newly-crowned Asian champions, but only played the first half against Japan.

At that stage the only goal was the one he put through his own net when he turned Sho Sasaki’s header past goalkeeper Leonel Moreira. Takumi Minamino and Junya Ito completed the victory in the final half-hour.

The game was Japan’s first under new coach Hajime Moriyasu.

They had been due to host Chile in Sapporo on Friday in their first game since reaching the last 16 of the World Cup, but the match was postponed after an earthquake on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido a day earlier.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross must now assess whether or not Oviedo is fit to face Burton Albion on Saturday.

Denver Hume performed admirably in his absence at home to Fleetwood. It was the 22-year-old’s first league start.

League One and Two clubs play through English football’s international breaks. They are allowed to postpone matches if they have three international call-ups, but Oviedo was the only senior player called up this month.

The 28-year-old former Everton defender, Sunderland’s highest earner, has started three league matches this season, and come off the bench in the other two. The quality of his performances and his attitude have greatly impressed manager Ross.
