Severe storms in two movements today

We saw some strong storms roll through the area this afternoon. The strongest storms were in the southern coalfields, and there were some reports of large hail and wind damage – especially in the Welch area. Most of those storms are gone now, but there are still some flooding concerns as the rain continues.

But, unfortunately, another complex of storms is forming to the west over the mid-Mississippi Valley and by later tonight and early tomorrow morning, that complex will be here.

With this next batch of storms, there will be strong wind gusts (perhaps as strong as hurricane force), large hail, and perhaps even a few tornadoes. The other issue will be the chance of flooding, with heavy rains possible.

The storms will exit the area fairly quickly, but will come through late enough where you’ll want to have multiple ways to get warnings tonight.

After the storms finally exit tomorrow morning, skies will clear, and the winds will pick up. Temperatures will drop into the lower 70s for highs. Another storm system will approach on Monday evening, and chances for rain will take us through the rest of the extended forecast. Temperatures will drop even further behind the next system and will be below the normal for the first time in a while.
