The Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) and Fiji Rakavi Football Union (FRFU) have taken a historic step toward collaboration, aiming to share knowledge and improve sports administration in the country.
At a collaboration meeting held at Fiji FA headquarters yesterday, FRU chairman John Sanday and Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel discussed development pathways, financial management and operational structures.
“All the aspirations I have for Fiji Rugby, Fiji football is already well ahead in that space,” Sanday said, highlighting Fiji FA’s structured approach to administration and player development.
Patel emphasised the importance of working together.
“Our doors are open to assist rugby in finance, operations and administration. It’s up to them to decide how they want to collaborate,” he said.
One key discussion point was inclusivity in rugby.
Sanday expressed his desire to see an Indo-Fijian player represent Fiji Rugby.
“That would be my biggest legacy,” he stated.
The FRU is also working toward commercialising rugby.
“We’ve been very busy modernising operations and people will soon see the results,” Sanday added.
Patel commended rugby’s grassroots efforts but pointed out the need for stronger administrative structures.
He also noted that Fiji FA’s humanitarian fund, which supports families during natural disasters could be an initiative that rugby considers adopting.
Both leaders agreed this is just the beginning of a long-term partnership aimed at strengthening sports in Fiji and creating more opportunities for young athletes.
