Warning to motorists after flood rescues across Wales

Motorists have been urged to take care driving through flood water after a number of people became stranded on Sunday and more rain forecast this week.

Firefighters were called to incidents throughout south, west and mid Wales on Sunday evening.

Some roads were also shut in Ceredigion, Powys and Rhondda Cynon Taff on Monday due to surface water.

Two flood warnings remain in place for rivers in Powys and Pembrokeshire.

Richie Felton, road safety manager at Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We appeal to motorists to pay attention to the road conditions, particularly when there are large amounts of standing water, and heed road signs indicating that a road is closed or flooded.

"Slow down when driving through standing water as this can cause you to aquaplane, losing control of your vehicle.

"Your vehicle may become stuck if you try to drive through floodwater and could even be swept away if the floodwater is moving." ​

The incidents involving fire and rescue crews included:

  • The driver of a transit van was stuck in waist-high flowing water at Talsarn, near Lampeter, at about 21:30 GMT
  • A woman could not get out of her vehicle because of floodwater in Llandovery at about 19:15. Crews helped the council find a blocked culvert
  • A car was pinned against a bridge in floodwater in Llancarfan at about 19:10 but the man who had been driving managed to get out. The road was later closed by police
  • An elderly couple were stranded in water at Reynoldston, Gower, at about 18:10

There were no incidents reported in north Wales.

Flooding on parts of the A490 at Welshpool prompted Dyfed-Powys Police to contact the council in the early hours of Monday. Officers said there was "serious flooding" on parts of the road at 02:30.

A landslip has halted Arriva Trains Wales services between Porth and Treherbert with replacement buses operating until at least Tuesday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said officers also had to deal with a landslide on the road between Pisgah and Capel Seion in Ceredigion.

Heavy rain and snow also fell across parts of Wales on Sunday but had no major impact.
