Semi Cagi, 85, has cautioned people living in flood-prone areas to always take immediate action when a weather warning is given to move to safety and to find shelter.

The oldest evacuee at the Rakiraki Muslim Primary School shared his advice when the Fiji Sun visited his family including 14 other evacuees at the evacuation centre yesterday.

The evacuation centre caters to at least 15 people from Nadugu Settlement in Rakiraki including a number of infants.

Together with his family who lives beside a river, Mr Cagi took immediate action because there were possibilities of a flood in the area.

“It is all about making the effort for one’s own safety,” he said.

“It’s best for me to be here rather than being home because when the flood comes, people will have to come and get me.

“It’s better I make the effort, knowing I will be safe.”

“My advice for people is to move and don’t wait when there is a cyclone or flood warning.”

His granddaughter, Mereoni Matai said the family moved to the evacuation centre at 8pm on Saturday.
