NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Dust from the Sahara Desert could move from Texas to Tennessee this week.
Transported thousands of miles from West Africa to North America, the dust particles are carried across the Atlantic by winds and have already reached Texas according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The NOAA says the dust travel is not that uncommon but the current event is on the "larger side."
NASA says hundreds of millions of tons of dust are actually picked up and blown across the ocean each year and can even play a role in suppressing hurricanes.
